Antioquia is one of Colombia´s 32 departments. It´s got an area of 63.612 km² and it is located to the Northwest . It is one of the country´s oldest territorial entities.
The department is divided into 125 towns . Its capital is Medellín ; Colombia´s second city in terms of size and economy.
The department´s geography offers a wonderful territory for many recreational and touristic activites. It has got the Western and Central mountain ranges , valleys, a sea , rivers , plateaus, moors, marshes, and forests. No doubt , it´s a paradise for adventure sports.
There is a very interesting ethnic mix in Antioquia. One might find people from coastal areas , from the savannas, people with an African or indigenous ancestry, and of course one will always find the predominant “Paisas” who represent 90 percent of the department´s population. Paisas are a very traditionalist and religious kind of people who are used to hard work in the countryside and who have a touch of the Colombian “cowboy”.
Medellín is a modern and thriving city which reflects the hard working spirit of “paisas” . Its people are proud of their city , their heritage and their metro. They are excellent hosts and love to meet and help people from other countries. They have definitely left behind the times of Pablo Escobar and are now looking forward to a very different and prosperous future.
One can find lots of beautiful and unique small towns such as Jardin, which is located just 2 hours South of Medellin , having a splendid main square and a peculiar local architecture. Besides, its surroundings offer the possibility of many different adventure activities and walks.
Antioquia´s Eastern areas will provide you with green , fertile lands , fresh breeze and sunny days. You won´t be able to stop admiring the flower plantations , the beautiful farms and country houses, and the enormous Arvi Natural Park with activites such as canopy and nature walks.
Guatapé Dam is just an hour away from Medellin and it is a marvellous place to rest. It is a huge and beautiful lake , full of small islands with a mesmerizing shade of green .
Santa Fe de Antioquia is one of Colombia´s top 5 colonial attractions. It is a beautiful town with a wonderful hot weather which was built with a colonial style.
It goes without saying that the best thing Antioquia and , of course the rest of Colombia, can offer is its unique people and as such, visitors are simply fascinated by their warmth and hospitality .
