Comuna 13 Tour in Medellin

During a half-day tour, we visit an area of the city of Medellin that has experienced a painful history but also an interesting and fascinating transformation.

Comuna 13 in Medellin is one of the 16 districts of Medellin and is the second largest district in the city with 134,000 inhabitants.
The zone is divided into 19 barrios and during the graffiti tour we will visit 3 of these districts.

From the 1970s to the 1990s, the hillside neighborhoods of Comuna 13 were built by people who fled from other regions and urban zones to escape the violence of the rural zones infested by paramilitaries and guerrillas. Since there was no state presence, illegal armed groups took advantage of this, occupied the territory and terrorized the residents for many years. From the late 1990s to 2002, the Colombian government carried out numerous military operations, which ended with the controversial Operation Orion on October 16.

Today, only the murals and graffiti of the local hip hop scene and the stories of the people who lived through these times are reminders of this dark past.

Comuna 13 pulsates with a positive and dynamic energy, thanks to its residents who have transformed their neighborhood into a dorado of art galleries, murals and dance and freestyle rap shows.

With a guide from Casa Kolacho, the pioneers of graffiti tours in Medellin, we explore the narrow streets, galleries and murals of Comuna 13 and enjoy some of the spectacular Break Dance Shows performed by local dancers.

Of course, you will have the opportunity to take the cable car up into the mountains of Medellin and enjoy spectacular views over the city.
