Orinoco Wild Safari – Colombia’s Untamed Savannas
A Journey into Colombia’s Untamed Llanos
Discover one of South America’s last great wilderness regions on this exclusive safari-style journey through Colombia’s Orinoco Region. Far from the crowds and well beyond the usual travel routes, the Llanos Orientales offer vast savannas, winding rivers, extraordinary wildlife, and authentic encounters with local Llanero culture.
This carefully curated multi-day experience combines daily wildlife safaris, boat excursions, walking explorations, and horseback riding, all based at the remote and conservation-focused Juan Solito Ecolodge at Hato Aurora Nature Reserve — one of the best wildlife reserves in Colombia.
Day 1: Arrival in the Llanos & Sunset on the River
Your adventure begins with an early departure from Bogotá and a scenic flight to Yopal, gateway to the Eastern Plains. From here, a 4-hour 4x4 journey takes you deep into the heart of the savannas of Casanare, crossing wide-open landscapes rich in wildlife.
After settling into the ecolodge and enjoying lunch, you head out on your first excursion: a sunset boat ride on the Ariporo River. As golden light reflects on the water, you may spot capybaras, caimans, howler monkeys, and countless bird species — a magical introduction to the Llanos.
Overnight at Juan Solito Ecolodge in Casanares. Lunch and dinner at Juan Solito Ecolodge.
Day 2: Full-Day Safari in the Eastern Plains
Spend an entire day exploring the reserve on safari-style excursions by jeep, 4x4 truck or tractor, guided by expert local trackers. The Llanos are one of Colombia’s top regions for wildlife observation, home to giant anteaters, deer, monkeys, reptiles, and hundreds of bird species, including scarlet macaws, jabirus, and Orinoco geese.
Beyond wildlife, the safari also offers insight into the region’s living traditions. Meet Llanero cowboys, learn about sustainable cattle ranching, and enjoy authentic local cuisine during a conservation talk at the main ranch house.

Day 3: Walking the Savanna & Horseback Exploration
Experience the Llanos at a slower pace with a guided hike through the savanna, following animal tracks and searching for anteaters and other wildlife. In the afternoon, saddle up for a horseback ride across the plains, a traditional way to explore the region and a chance to spot species such as anacondas near waterways.

Day 4: Sunrise Safari & Deep Immersion
An early morning sunrise safari reveals the Llanos at their most active. As the sun rises over the savanna, wildlife emerges and birdlife fills the air. After breakfast and time to relax at the lodge, the afternoon brings another extended safari, offering new perspectives and encounters.
